What Is One Rep Max (1RM)?
Your one-rep max (1RM) is the maximum amount of weight you can lift for a single repetition of a given exercise with proper form. It's the gold standard for measuring absolute strength and the foundation for structuring effective training programs.
Knowing your 1RM allows you to calculate precise training loads for different goals:
65-75% of 1RM — Hypertrophy (muscle growth), 8-12 reps per set
75-85% of 1RM — Strength endurance, 5-8 reps per set
85-90% of 1RM — Pure strength, 3-5 reps per set
90%+ of 1RM — Maximal strength, 1-2 reps per set
For most lifters, testing an actual 1RM is risky and unnecessary. Estimating it from a sub-maximal set of 3-6 reps is safer, nearly as accurate, and lets you progress without accumulating unnecessary fatigue.
How We Calculate Your 1RM
This calculator uses the Epley formula, one of the most widely validated prediction equations in strength training research:
1RM = Weight × (1 + Reps / 30)
For example, if you bench press 185 lbs for 5 reps: 185 × (1 + 5/30) = 185 × 1.167 = 216 lbs estimated 1RM.
The Epley formula is most accurate for rep ranges between 2 and 10. Above 10 reps, the estimate becomes less reliable because muscular endurance begins to factor in more than pure strength. If you're using a rep range above 10, consider doing a heavier set with fewer reps for a more accurate prediction.
Frequently Asked Questions
For most recreational lifters, estimated 1RM from a 3-5 rep max is sufficient. Testing an actual 1RM carries higher injury risk and requires a spotter, proper warm-up, and experience with the lift. Reserve actual 1RM testing for competition prep under coach supervision.
Recalculate every 4-6 weeks or after completing a training cycle. If you're a beginner, your 1RM may increase faster — recalculate every 3-4 weeks. Use the same exercise and similar rep range each time for consistent comparisons.
Above 12 reps, the Epley formula becomes less accurate. If you can lift a weight for 15+ reps, that weight is likely below 65% of your true 1RM. For better accuracy, use a heavier weight that limits you to 3-8 reps.
