Most budget benches advertise static load capacity — the maximum weight that can sit still and evenly distributed on the pad without the bench collapsing. Dynamic load, the kind of force a moving bar creates, is higher and almost never listed.

When you press a barbell off your chest, the load shifts constantly. At the bottom of a rep, the bar decelerates and reverses direction. The force transmitted into the bench at that moment is greater than the weight on the bar — especially if you rebound off your chest with any speed. A 225-lb bench press doesn’t put 225 lb of force into the bench. It puts in more.
